Gooey cheddar melted between sweet Hawaiian rolls, brushed with butter and spices for golden, bite-sized appetizers.

# What You’ll Need:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 1 package (12-count) Hawaiian sweet rolls
02 - 8 oz cheddar cheese, sliced
03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

→ Optional Flavor Boosters

04 - 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
05 - 1 tbsp mayonnaise
06 - 1 tsp garlic powder
07 - 1 tsp dried parsley

# Steps:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
02 - Without separating the rolls, slice the whole block of Hawaiian rolls horizontally to create a top and bottom half.
03 - If using, whisk together Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. Spread evenly onto the cut sides of the rolls.
04 - Layer cheddar cheese evenly over the bottom half of the rolls. Place the top half over the cheese to reassemble.
05 - Place assembled rolls onto prepared baking sheet. Brush tops generously with melted butter. Sprinkle with garlic powder and dried parsley, if desired.
06 - Cover loosely with foil and bake for 10 minutes.
07 - Remove foil and bake an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and tops are golden.
08 - Let rest 2 minutes, then cut apart into 12 mini sandwiches. Serve warm.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The slight sweetness of Hawaiian rolls creates the most incredible contrast with savory melted cheese that you just cannot get from regular bread
  • Making them as one big slab and cutting after baking means everything stays warm and gooey simultaneously
02 -
  • The most important trick is keeping the rolls connected while slicing and baking, otherwise they dry out and cook unevenly
  • Letting them rest for those 2 minutes after baking is crucial, otherwise the cheese will ooze out completely when you cut them
03 -
  • Use a serrated knife in a gentle sawing motion to slice through the rolls without crushing them
  • If your cheese is not melting completely, tent with foil for an extra 2-3 minutes but keep an eye on the tops
